The classic professional dry cutter — built to last a career

I'm Jun. I sharpen shears for a living, and I built Butter from years of fixing the tools hair pros depend on every day. The Nova D is the Nova handle you already know — booster balance tang, quiet silencer pin, low-profile dial — with the wider blade sharpened at a steeper 45–50° angle for dry and slide cutting.

The steeper angle gives this shear the slicing power to glide clean through dry hair in one sharp pass. Add cryogenic treatment for 400+ cutting hours between sharpenings, about two sharpenings a year for a full-time hair pro, and 10+ years of lifespan.

Pick your length

6.25" · the versatile default
The most popular length. Enough blade for most dry cutting techniques without losing control.
6.75" · more reach
More blade for long slide cuts, scissor-over-comb, and working through bigger sections.
Steel: AG16 cobalt
Hardness: 61 HRC
Edge: true convex, sharpened at 45–50°
Tang: booster balance
Treatment: cryogenic · 400+ cutting hours
Longevity: 10+ years
Construction: Forged, not cast
Try it for 30 days. If it isn't right for your hand, send it back. These carry a lifetime manufacturer warranty, and I answer every message myself.

Cutting shears

Built for dry cutting

Dry hair has more resistance than wet hair, so the edge has to work harder on every pass. Too shallow an angle pulls instead of slices — and that pulling tears the cuticle, causing split ends on layers. This blade is thicker and finished at a steeper angle built for that resistance. No pulling, no split ends.

Wet cutting
Finished at 35–40°. Fine edge built for wet hair — dulls faster on dry.
THIS SHEAR
Dry / slide cutting
Sharpened at 45–50°. Extra slicing power for sharp, clean glides through dry hair.

The real cost

The cheap shear is the most expensive shear you can buy

Full-time hair pro, 40 hrs/week, $50 per sharpening. Budget shears repurchased every 2–3 years.

Butter Shears · ~$400 best value
Sharpenings per year 2x
Lifespan 10+ years
10-year total cost ~$1,400 lowest
Budget shear · ~$150
Sharpenings per year 6x
Lifespan 2–3 years
10-year total cost ~$3,600 $2,200 more
Premium brand · ~$1,200
Sharpenings per year 2x
Lifespan 10+ years
10-year total cost ~$2,200 $800 more

Butter Shears saves you ~$2,200 vs a budget shear over 10 years. The premium brand costs $800 more upfront for the same edge life and sharpening frequency — money that never comes back. One shear. One time.

The steel, explained

What AG16 steel actually means

The HRC number is the Rockwell Hardness rating — the higher it is, the harder the steel, the finer the edge, and the longer it stays sharp. Most brands won't tell you what's in the blade.

Budget steel · 420 grade ~52–55 HRC

Dulls fast. Needs frequent sharpening to stay usable.

Premium · VG-10 Japanese 59–60 HRC

What most $400–$850 shears are built on. The industry standard for premium.

AG16 cobalt · Japanese 61 HRC

Higher cobalt than VG-10. 400+ cutting hours between sharpenings.

Price doesn't tell you a shear is good

Brands charge whatever they want for their name. What actually matters is the steel, the edge, and how it's built. Ours is the same grade the big names put in $850 shears. You get the build without paying for the logo.

🛡  30-day happiness guarantee — not right for your hand, send it back

⭐  Lifetime manufacturer warranty on every shear

"Every pair is sharpened and checked by hand before it ships. If something's ever off, you message me and I answer it myself."

FAQ's

Picking a length

5.5" is best for detail work and close precision cutting.

6" is the most popular all-around length. It works for most cutting styles and hand sizes.

6.85"-7" suits pros who do a lot of volume, big chops, or scissor-over-comb work. The long blade helps you move quickly through your work

Let's talk about the price

This is not a normal price for shears of this quality. Name brands charge 3x for the same build quality and metal.

Sometimes they won't even disclose the quality and you are buying Amazon-quality shears for a luxury price point. Criminal, we know.

We have sharpened thousands of shears. We know what holds up and what doesn't. Trust us when we say, these are top-quality, long-lasting shears with VG-10 or AG-16 steel and a ball-bearing tension system built to keep out hair and grime.

No fast dulling shears. No clogged shears.

What if I don't like it once I get it?

Your shears come with a 30-day happiness guarantee. If the shear isn't the right fit (wrong size, wrong feel, not what you expected) contact us within 30 days for a full refund. No runaround.

Every shear also carries a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects.

How long will the edge hold?

With proper care, VG-10 or AG-16 steel holds an edge for 400+ cutting hours, about two sharpenings a year.

The signs it's time: Resistance that wasn't there before.

When it's time for a sharpening we are here for you!

Do I need to do anything when it arrives?

Check the tension before your first use.

How to check: A properly tensioned shear should hold its own weight when the blade is opened to 90°. It should not close all the way shut, making a small peace sign ✌️

I have been wanting to try a swivel shear and I’m super happy with my initial few cuts using these. I would say I am nearly used to them already after one day of cutting. Super intuitive. Packaging was great. They came pretty quickly.

Absolutely in love with these shears. And the swivel makes it much easier to keep my hands in a more neutral cutting position.

Hi Shelby, we're thrilled to hear you love the Nova Swivel Hair Cutting Shears! Thanks for sharing your experience.
