Dry cutting comfort — without the wrist and shoulder strain

I'm Jun. I sharpen shears for a living, and I built Butter from years of fixing the tools stylists depend on every day. The Ergo D Swivel combines the dry-cutting blade of the Ergo D with a swivel thumb.

You get the steeper 45–50° edge that glides clean through dry hair without pulling or causing split ends, and the swivel puts your thumb, wrist, and shoulder into a natural relaxed position at the same time.

If you do a lot of dry or slide cutting and you're already feeling it in your body, this is the pair I'd put in your hand first.

Pick your length

5.75" · precise and controlled
Great for detailed dry work, point cutting, and slide cutting through shorter sections.
6.75" · more reach
More blade for long slide cuts, scissor-over-comb, and working through bigger sections.
Steel: AG16 cobalt Japanese
Hardness: 61 HRC
Edge: true convex, sharpened at 45–50°
Handle: swivel thumb
Made: by hand in California
Try it for 30 days. If it isn't right for your hand, send it back. These carry a lifetime manufacturer warranty, and I answer every message myself.

Cutting shears

Built for wet cutting

Wet hair is cooperative — it stretches slightly and lets the blade slice cleanly with less resistance. This pair is finished at a shallower angle that holds it's edge longer. Wet cutting shears are the workhorse most hair pros reach for first.

THIS SHEAR
Wet cutting
Finished at 35–40°. Fine edge, low friction, stays sharp. This is your workhorse shear.
Dry / slide cutting
Sharpened at 45–50°. Steeper edge built for dry hair resistance.

The steel, explained

What AG16 steel actually means

The HRC number is the Rockwell Hardness rating — the higher it is, the harder the steel, the finer the edge, and the longer it stays sharp. Most brands won't tell you what's in the blade.

Budget steel · 420 grade ~52–55 HRC

Dulls fast. Needs frequent sharpening to stay usable.

Premium · VG-10 Japanese 59–60 HRC

What most $400–$850 shears are built on. The industry standard for premium.

AG16 cobalt · Japanese 61 HRC

Higher cobalt than VG-10. 800+ cutting hours between sharpenings.

Price doesn't tell you a shear is good

Brands charge whatever they want for their name. What actually matters is the steel, the edge, and how it's built. Ours is the same grade the big names put in $850 shears, made by hand in California. You get the build without paying for the logo.

🛡  30-day happiness guarantee — not right for your hand, send it back

⭐  Lifetime manufacturer warranty on every shear

FAQ's

Picking a length

5.5" is best for detail work and close precision cutting.

6" is the most popular all-around length. It works for most cutting styles and hand sizes.

6.85"-7" suits pros who do a lot of volume, big chops, or scissor-over-comb work. The long blade helps you move quickly through your work

Not sure? The shear size guide has a full breakdown.

Let's talk about the price

This is not a normal price for shears of this quality. Name brands charge 3x for the same build quality and metal.

Sometimes they won't even disclose the quality and you are buying Amazon-quality shears for a luxury price point. Criminal, we know.

We have sharpened thousands of shears. We know what holds up and what doesn't. Trust us when we say, these are top-quality, long-lasting shears with VG-10 or AG-16 steel and a ball-bearing tension system built to keep out hair and grime.

No fast dulling shears. No clogged shears.

What if I don't like it once I get it?

Your shears come with a 30-day happiness guarantee. If the shear isn't the right fit (wrong size, wrong feel, not what you expected) contact us within 30 days for a full refund. No runaround.

Every shear also carries a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects.

How long will the edge hold?

With proper care, VG-10 or AG-16 Japanese steel holds an edge for 800+ cutting hours.

For a full-time pro that's roughly 3–4 months between sharpenings. For part-time or color focused pros, closer to 6–8 months.

The signs it's time: Resistance that wasn't there before.

When it's time for a sharpening we are here for you!

Do I need to do anything when it arrives?

Check the tension before your first use.

How to check: A properly tensioned shear should hold its own weight when the blade is opened to 90°. It should not close all the way shut, making a small peace sign ✌️
