A no-line blend with a blade built differently

I'm Jun. I sharpen shears for a living, and I built Butter from years of fixing the tools stylists depend on every day. Most blending shears have a straight blade opposite the teeth. This one has a reverse blade — the teeth face the opposite direction, which changes how hair is captured and released on every pass. The result is that cut hair falls away from the section instead of into it which gives you more control over exactly how much you're removing.

This shear is particularly forgiving on fine or color-treated hair where a heavy pass would be obvious. Removes 10–15% of density. Leaves no line.

28 teeth · reverse blade · removes 10–15%
True no-line finish. More control per pass than a standard blender.
Steel: AG16 cobalt Japanese
Hardness: 61 HRC
Edge: reverse blade · true convex
Tang: booster balance
Treatment: cryogenic · 800+ cutting hours
Longevity: 10+ years
Made: by hand in California
Try it for 30 days. If it isn't right for your hand, send it back. These carry a lifetime manufacturer warranty, and I answer every message myself.

Blending & texturizing

How much do you want to remove?

All our thinners are measured by how much density they take out. This pair is a no-line blend. It softens and removes weight while leaving zero visible line in the hair.

The steel, explained

What AG16 steel actually means

The HRC number is the Rockwell Hardness rating — the higher it is, the harder the steel, the finer the edge, and the longer it stays sharp. Most brands won't tell you what's in the blade.

Budget steel · 420 grade ~52–55 HRC

Dulls fast. Needs frequent sharpening to stay usable.

Premium · VG-10 Japanese 59–60 HRC

What most $400–$850 shears are built on. The industry standard for premium.

AG16 cobalt · Japanese 61 HRC

Higher cobalt than VG-10. 800+ cutting hours between sharpenings.

Price doesn't tell you a shear is good

Brands charge whatever they want for their name. What actually matters is the steel, the edge, and how it's built. Ours is the same grade the big names put in $850 shears, made by hand in California. You get the build without paying for the logo.

🛡  30-day happiness guarantee — not right for your hand, send it back

FAQ's

Picking a length

5.5" is best for detail work and close precision cutting.

6" is the most popular all-around length. It works for most cutting styles and hand sizes.

6.85"-7" suits pros who do a lot of volume, big chops, or scissor-over-comb work. The long blade helps you move quickly through your work

Not sure? The shear size guide has a full breakdown.

Let's talk about the price

This is not a normal price for shears of this quality. Name brands charge 3x for the same build quality and metal.

Sometimes they won't even disclose the quality and you are buying Amazon-quality shears for a luxury price point. Criminal, we know.

We have sharpened thousands of shears. We know what holds up and what doesn't. Trust us when we say, these are top-quality, long-lasting shears with VG-10 or AG-16 steel and a ball-bearing tension system built to keep out hair and grime.

No fast dulling shears. No clogged shears.

What if I don't like it once I get it?

Your shears come with a 30-day happiness guarantee. If the shear isn't the right fit (wrong size, wrong feel, not what you expected) contact us within 30 days for a full refund. No runaround.

Every shear also carries a lifetime warranty against manufacturing defects.

How long will the edge hold?

With proper care, VG-10 or AG-16 Japanese steel holds an edge for 800+ cutting hours.

For a full-time pro that's roughly 3–4 months between sharpenings. For part-time or color focused pros, closer to 6–8 months.

The signs it's time: Resistance that wasn't there before.

When it's time for a sharpening we are here for you!

Do I need to do anything when it arrives?

Check the tension before your first use.

How to check: A properly tensioned shear should hold its own weight when the blade is opened to 90°. It should not close all the way shut, making a small peace sign ✌️
